Continue Mary’s ‘Yes’

“When Our Lady stood up, a queenly child, and uttered her ‘fiat’ to the Angel of God, her words began to make Christ’s voice. Those first words of consent had already spoken Christ’s last words of consent. Her [words], ‘I commit myself to you, do whatever you like with me’ were already spoken by Christ in her; they were one and the same with His: ‘Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.’”(from “The Reed of God” by Caryll Houselander)

The mystery of the Annunciation, celebrated on March 25, is a gentle reminder of our own Lenten purpose: to empty ourselves and stretch our hearts so we might be filled more with Christ. As Our Lady proclaimed her “Fiat!” to the Heavenly Father, we too are called to imitate her and continue Mary’s ‘Yes’ in this penitential season.

Each year, hundreds of young women say “Yes!” to God by attending one of our “Be Not Afraid” discernment retreats, held three times a year in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Each of these women utters her own, “Lord, do with me what You will this weekend” in imitation of Mary, model of all women. By opening the doors of her heart to God,  each retreatant receives His love and grace, as God is never outdone in generosity!

This Lent,  may each of us conform our lives to Christ, and echo the words: “Thy will be done!”

The last discernment retreat of the school year will be held April 6-7. Is God calling you or someone you know to attend?
